Ceramic Design
By Kesem Yahav
After studying Ceramic Design alongside exploring other disciplines including Industrial Design, Interior Design, painting, silk printing, and various materials and techniques, I have spent over twenty years working with clay as a designer and maker.
My multidisciplinary background continues to influence the way I approach design, combining curiosity, experimentation, and a hands-on understanding of materials and processes.
My work includes functional objects, sculptural pieces, and material research, always exploring the relationship between design, material, and process.
Every project begins with an idea, observation, or question. From sketches and prototypes to mould making, slip casting, hand building, glazing, and firing, each collection develops through experimentation and many stages of making.
During my studies in Ceramic Design, I specialised in mould making for ceramics, a technique that allows me to create detailed forms and produce multiple editions while maintaining the handmade quality of each piece.
Alongside slip casting, I work with hand building, wheel throwing, and mixed techniques, continually exploring new possibilities within the material.
My inspiration comes from everyday life, nature, and the city around me. Over the years, my work has evolved from clean, minimal forms in soft colours to more expressive pieces that explore texture, movement, playful colour, and material experimentation.
Some ideas grow into complete collections, while others remain ongoing material explorations. Together, they reflect different stages of my creative practice and an ongoing fascination with the possibilities of clay.
